MORNING RITUALS

Aloha Kakahiaka is how we say “good morning” in Hawaiʻi! As in many cultures, the morning is considered to be the most important time of the day, for it is the symbol of a new beginning. Hawaiians believed this to be true, and would often hold various blessings and ceremonies in the early morning before sunrise. These ceremonies were meant to not only cleanse the self of anything hewa (wrong), but to bring in energy that is pono (good) as well.

Chants, or ʻoli, were traditionally performed to greet the rising sun, symbolizing a fresh start and the promise of a new day. These ʻoli served not only as a cultural ritual, but also as a spiritual practice. Many Hawaiians still honor this tradition, recognizing it as a powerful way to not only connect with their ancestors, but to also clear the mind, set intentions, and release negativity.

A typical morning in Hawaiʻi nowadays usually consists of a delicious, hearty breakfast, a hot cup of Kona Coffee or tea, and maybe even a leisurely stroll on a beautiful beach. However you choose to start you mornings, let it be with intention and gratitude, and always mahalo (give thanks) that you are given a new chance at a new day.
