RELAXATION & WELLNESS

The concept of “wellness” has been practiced for thousands of years in thousands of ways, and this is no different for the people of Hawaiʻi. For the ancient Hawaiians, emotional, mental and spiritual wellness was just as if not more important than physical wellness. They had a number of healing practices and rituals, all of which implemented elements from nature, from the utilization of medicinal plants to bathing in the healing waters of sacred streams.

The ancient royal aliʻi (chiefs) of Oʻahu would often bathe in the many healing streams of Waikīkī, one of most famous known as Kawehewehe, where they would unwind, reflect, and restore themselves. Offerings of lei were given to ask for forgiveness for past wrongdoings, which were thought to be the cause of sickness. In removing emotional burdens, the aliʻi were healed and renewed in both body and spirit.

Still today, we must remember to take moments out of our everyday lives to hoʻonanea (relax) and mālama (care for) ourselves. Whether it’s a refreshing dip in the ocean or a peaceful walk through nature, nurturing wellness remains an essential part of life. As you partake in your own healing practices, bring a little extra wellness into your day with these signature island fragrances and souvenirs of aloha.
